Piers Morgan; Genuine Arsenal Football Fan or Rogue Journalist?

LIKE the American dream itself, how anything is possible in a land of the free you may certainly become a defined parody of whomever you choose, even by those infestations I find it quite incredible that Piers Morgan has managed to worm himself into the category of celebrity, T.V pundit and all round hired representative on any subject he cares to suggest he has a profane knowledge in.

Well Piers is not the only blagger who can make an argument about who he really is and where he comes from, his history is as chequered as a chess board, and he has played as many pieces required to playing such a game. From Pawn to King it is a journey that even Hollywood would struggle to keep up with, so where did it start for Piers the football aficionado.

Our Hero In His Office

Piers Stefan Pughe-Morgan would go on to study Journalism at Harlow College and his big break would come when in his own words “ I was headhunted by Kelvin MacKenzie” yes that’s correct him of Hillsborough & The Truth headline, he would be employed as Editor of The Suns showbiz column Bizarre under the stewardship of MacKenzie from 1989-1994.

Today’s current furor toward the media and invasion of privacy of both celebrity and members of the public, through phone-hacking, spying and other low-life journalistic approach can be traced back to 1994 when Piers Morgan was tasked with the Editorship of the now closed News of The World newspaper by its owner Rupert Murdoch. He would quickly gain notoriety for his invasive, thrusting style and lack of concern for celebrities’ right to privacy, claiming that they could not manipulate the media to further their own ends without accepting the consequences of a two-way deal, a marriage made in Fleet Street heaven.

Within two years Morgan would once again find him on the journalistic merry-go-round, we would now find him at the Daily Mirror again in the role of Editor. As editor of the Mirror, in 1996 Morgan was widely criticised and forced to apologise for the headline “Achtung! Surrender” which would be published a day before England were to meet Germany in a semi-final of the Euro ’96 football championships.

In 2000, he was the subject of an investigation after Suzy Jagger wrote a story in The Daily Telegraph revealing that he had bought £20,000 worth of shares in the computer company Viglen soon before the Mirror ‘s ‘City Slickers’ column tipped Viglen as a good buy. Piers Morgan was found by the Press Complaints Commission to have breached the Code of Conduct on financial journalism, but kept his job. The ‘City Slickers’ columnists, Anil Bhoyrul and James Hipwell, were both found to have committed further breaches of the Code, and were sacked before the inquiry. In 2004, further enquiry by the Department of Trade and Industry cleared Morgan from any charges On 7 December 2005 Bhoyrul and Hipwell were convicted of conspiracy to breach the Financial Services Act. During the trial it emerged that Morgan had bought £67,000 worth of Viglen shares, emptying his bank account and investing under his wife’s name too

Just at a point where we may expect there to no more faux pas from the impeccably mannered Mr. Morgan he was to be fired from the Daily Mirror on 14 May 2004 after authorising the newspaper’s publication of photographs allegedly showing Iraqi prisoners being abused by British Army soldiers from the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment, within days the photographs were shown to be very crude fakes. Under the headline “SORRY.. WE WERE HOAXED”, the Mirror responded that it had fallen victim to a “calculated and malicious hoax” and apologised for publication of the photographs.

A sorry sorry display of headlines while Piers Morgan was editor.

As they say in show business land the rest is history, but hold on for a moment where is the historical day when Piers became such an insightful and knowledgeable football fan? Well Hollywood has not written this part of the story yet, so like Piers we may have to make this up as we go along.

Allegedly Piers Morgan is an Arsenal fan or supporter much to the embarrassment of both the club and true Arsenal supporters, having stated as far back as 2008 that the club’s Manager Arsene Wenger should be dismissed, a statement he would repeat on Twitter, only for a week later he would apologise after Arsenal were to come out victorious against their London counterparts Chelsea, Morgan had also told his followers that Chelsea would win easily!! Nice support Piers.

Piers Morgan is a season ticket holder at The Emirates, its nice what money can buy, unfortunately he believes this means his opinion is somewhat more important than genuine fans that perhaps sit at home and watch the game, who however do not ask for Arsenals greatest and most successful Manager to be sacked.

After Arsenal were to lose to Birmingham in The Carling Cup final 2011 he was distraught, it was as if they had lost in The Champions League Final, incredulous that his beloved Arsenal had been beaten, it did not stop the cretin of a man suggesting that they were all overpaid lazy people who had let poor little Piers down.

At the start of the season he made such a massive point about the fact he was a season ticket holder at the Emirates. He then went on to say “Arsenal have won precisely nothing since then [the title in 2004]. Not even a Carling bloody Cup” . He obviously knows his Arsenal history as they actually won the F.A Cup in 2005 beating Manchester United in a penalty shoot-out at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium!! Maybe he was busy on the phone when that one happened, or trailing through Charlotte Church’s bin.

So why the hate and despise from Arsenal fans? You have to go back to when Piers was Editor at The Daily Mirror and he was responsible for printing false reports which resulted in 37 Arsenal fans being branded football hooligans and thugs after the trouble between Arsenal and Galatasaray fans in Copenhagen. Resulting in some losing their jobs(later re-instated through work tribunals) and all were to have their season tickets taken from them.

The actual truth of this incident was the majority of those supporters, who were just ordinary football supporters, just happened to find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time, and as the trouble and fighting erupted these people ended up protecting their families from the trouble.

And in a theme that Piers had continued with all his journalistic life, he once again issued an apology all of eight years later, however these people have still to live with tarnished reputations, which cannot be salvaged with a tiny Tweet of an apology or a hidden article archived so the masses will never see.

When is an apology not an apology but an excuse.

Forward fire to 2012 and his opinion of the Carling Cup has suddenly changed, it is nothing better than a little trophy for little clubs, not a trophy worthy of his beloved Arsenal and their slightly empty cabinet! Make your mind up Piers .

Remember this man has continued to protect the Murdoch family in all his journalism life, there is obviously a reason for that, but it is not what an honest and independent journalist would do, disingenuous journalism. All true football supporters and definitely Arsenal & Liverpool fans should not be following this lowlife with his incestuous nepotistic  links with both MacKenzie and Murdoch, peddling lies to later dismiss them as just dumb and inaccurate, no Piers they are called LIES!!!

The fact that Piers Morgan was so evasive at the Leveson phone hacking enquiry, even though by his own words he knew it was going on, shows the man for what he was, and is?
